Top 5 Features of Pixel Phone | Initial Impressions

October 4th 2016 turned out to be a day full of hardware announcements for Google. From Pixel phones to Daydream VR, it was just the hardware throughout the keynote.

No need to mention that the Pixel and Pixel XL phones were the center of attraction for this event. As per the first look, phone seems to be quite promising with best rated camera by DXOMark, Google assistant integration, Snapdragon 821 SoC etc.

With a ton of improvements here are top 5 features of Pixel phones.

1. Best Camera

DXOMark has given the best rating of 89 to the camera of Pixel phones among all the smartphone cameras in the world.

Lets focus on technical aspects of it. Pixel’s camera has 12.3MP rear camera with 1.55μm pixel size to capture more light to enhance low light performance and also has f/2.0 aperture.

This is not the only thing which makes it special. Google says it has almost zero shutter lag which seemed quite true as per the demos on YouTube. HDR+ is enabled by default to give you more dynamic range in the picture. It also has EIS instead of OIS for video stabilization, which Google claims is the best.

2. Google Assistant Integration

Recently we saw Google assistant in action inside “Google Allo” app.

Now it is integrated in the phone. Just tap and hold the home icon to launch the assistant to basically to do anything you want on any screen of the phone, like ask it for reservation of tables for dinner, any fact based questions or play music of the last movie you saw etc.

3. Background Update Installation

This feature may not be hyped as much as camera or any other features, but according to me this is one of the best features of this phone.

What it does is, whenever a new update is found, the download takes place automatically in the background and the installation is also done in the background. So next time when you restart the phone there is no “Android is upgrading” screen to annoy you for minutes and minutes. You get the updated system as soon as restart the phone.

4. Easy to Switch from iOS/Android

Now you can switch from any iPhone and Android phone with a small “Quick Switch Adapter”. Just connect your iPhone to Pixel phone and follow steps and thats it you are good to go with all your data like contacts, SMS, iMessage, Music, Pictures from iPhone. All of this in one go.

5. Quick Charge

Google claims to give you 7 hours of usage after just 15 mins of charging. That is a big big claim.

BONUS Feature

A Headphone Jack

Yes, you read that right! This may sound funny but we should not take headphone jack for granted after Apple has removed it from iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, so did Motorola and some other companies.pixel-cw-2-0-0

Having said that, Pricing starts at $649 for 5-inch Pixel with 32GB of storage, $749 with 128GB of onboard storage, $769 for the larger Pixel XL with 32GB, or $869 for the XL with 128GB.

That is some heavy pricing and can have big impact on the sales of Pixel as everyone was expecting it to be priced similar to earlier Nexus.

Let us see how it performs with the likes of iPhone, Galaxy Note 7/S7/S7 Edge.
